No picture from my video device when using an HDMI connection
There is no picture when using an HDMI connection.
First things first:
- This article troubleshoots problems when connecting an Audio/Video device to your TV with an HDMI cable.
If you use an analogue cable, please refer to this article . - If you have a smart TV, always update your TV with the latest firmware.
1. Check if you are using the correct INPUT
- Most TV remotes have an INPUT button that allows you to cycle between different INPUT ports. Every device connected to your TV is connected to some INPUT port on the back of your television, or via an amplifier.
- Have a look at the different ports at the back of your television or amplifier to confirm to which port the device is connected.
- For example, if you're video device is inserted in the HDMI1 port, please use the remote control to cycle to the HDMI 1 input. Also, ensure that the connected device is powered ON.
The location of the Input button on your remote and the number and names of the inputs may be different on your TV.
2. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable
Sometimes, a bad connection may occur and cause this problem. Follow the steps below:
- Turn off all the devices.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable from the HDMI Input terminal on the TV.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable from the HDMI Output terminal on the connected device.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable firmly to the same terminals as before on the TV and the connected device.
- Turn on the TV and connected device again to let them recognise each other
- If the issue continues, repeat the process but try a different HDMI input on your TV to see if this improves the situation.
3. Check the output of the connected Video device
Maybe the connected device is not outputting via its HDMI connection. The selected output may be visible on the display of your device or in the menus. Check the manual or settings menu of your Video output device (e.g., Blu-Ray player, DVD player, etc.) to check if it's possible that the output is not set on HDMI.
Try checking your device's settings:
Some devices may output different video signals that your TV cannot recognise. Changing the video output format of the connected device may resolve the issue. Check the manual or contact the manufacturer for further information about changing the video output format.
4. Check your amplifier
- If you are using an amplifier, check the manual to make sure your connections are correctly set. The amplifier/AV receiver needs to forward the signal to your television. Your amp might send a different signal through than the one you want (e.g. the amplifier sends a signal of the HDM2 port through, but your video device is connected to HDM1).
- Check if the INPUT on your amplifier matches the INPUT on your TV.
- Connect the Video device directly to an HDMI input of the TV. If that works, the cause of the issue is the amplifier setup.
- If you are connecting to an A/V receiver using an analogue connection type (Coaxial, Composite A/V, Component A/V, or S-Video), the receiver may not be able to convert that signal to HDMI to send to the TV. Refer to the operating instructions included with your A/V receiver for more information on other connection options.
5. Unplug the Video device and TV
Perform a simple reset by following this procedure:
- Turn off the connected device and the TV.
- Unplug the power cords of the device and the TV.
- Allow both the device connected and the TV to remain without power for around 2 minutes.
- Plug the power cords of the device and the TV back into the electrical outlet.
- Turn on the connected device and TV.
6. Try a different HDMI cable
- Maybe the HDMI cable you're using is malfunctioning, or old and unable to perform adequately. Try a different one to see if it solves your issue.
- Alternatively, you can use the first HDMI cable to connect a different video device to check if the video device is malfunctioning.
